Jesuit Headlines: Superior General Visits U.S., New Provincial and More

Jesuit Superior General Visits USA Central and Southern Province

Superior General Arturo Sosa, SJ, concelebrates Mass with Fr. Doug Marcouiller, SJ, and Fr. Thomas ÌýGreene, SJ, provincial of the USA Central and Southern Province.

The ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ and colleagues of the USA Central and Southern Province welcomed Fr. Arturo Sosa, SJ, Superior General of the Society of Jesus, for an 18-day province visitation that began January 26, 2026.

Fr. Sosa stopped in six cities of the province: Denver; St. Louis; Houston; New Orleans; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Belize City, Belize. In each location, he met with leaders of the local apostolates and celebrated the Eucharist with the ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ of the region.

Fr. Sosa’s homilies and talks in each place returned to central themes of reconciliation, the service of justice, the Jesuit mission to the frontiers, the universality of the Society and collaboration with others. Fr. James Martin, SJ, was interviewed by The New York Times on “.†The interview covered many topics, from the state of the Catholic Church to Pope Leo XIV, to immigration issues, to Fr. Martin’s new book, “Work in Progress,†about his teenage summer jobs and how they shaped him.

New Provincial for USA Central and Southern Province

Fr. Andrew Kirschman, SJ

Father General Arturo Sosa, SJ, appointed Fr. Andrew Kirschman, SJ, as the next provincial of the ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ USA Central and Southern Province, effective July 31, 2026, when Fr. Thomas Greene, SJ, concludes his tenure.

A St. Louis native, Fr. Kirschman has served the province in a variety of positions and is currently director of novices, a role he has held since 2018. Previously, he was socius (executive assistant) to the former novice director and coordinator of vocation promotion. He taught and coordinated community outreach at Arrupe Jesuit High School in Denver and provided spiritual formation for volunteers of the province’s Alum Service Corps.

“I am humbled and honored to be missioned to serve in this way,†Fr. Kirschman said. “Together we continue the important work of listening to the ways God’s Spirit invites us to give our lives in generous service, especially to those most in need and on the margins.†Read more.

Martyrs’ Shrine Celebrates Two Anniversaries in 2026

Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland, Ontario, is preparing for dual celebrations this year: The shrine itself is celebrating its centennial, while the Jesuit community is also celebrating 400 years since the arrival of St. Jean de Brébeuf and his mission in Huronia in central Ontario.

With various events and commemorations planned throughout the year, shrine director Fr. John O’Brien, SJ, has made sure to pause and reflect ahead of what promises to be a simultaneously hectic and fulfilling year. “A centennial is a time to look back in order to look forward, to see where we’ve come in order to observe the horizon ahead,†he said. “This year is something of a combination of celebration of the past hundred years, but also a time to renew our mission and continue to become a place where people can come and be renewed for another hundred years or more.â€

Fr. Dan Corrou, SJ, on How JRS Is Helping in the Middle East and Africa

Fr. Dan Corrou, SJ, regional director for Jesuit Refugee Service Middle East and North Africa, was recently a guest on “,†where he shared what day-to-day life in Lebanon looks like for him and the people he serves. He also discussed how St. Joseph’s Church in Beirut became a refuge for those rejected by other shelters during the 2024 bombings and what it was like for his staff when they were invited to speak to Pope Leo XIV during his visit in Lebanon.

Asteroid Named for U.S. Jesuit

Fr. David Brown, SJ, is the latest Jesuit to have an asteroid named for him. The asteroid, “(747532) Davidabrown,†was one of several discovered in 2012 by Vatican astronomer Fr. Richard P. Boyle, SJ, together with his long-time collaborator Kazimieras Černis.

Fr. Brown is an astronomer at the Vatican Observatory whose research focuses on stellar evolution, primarily conducting theoretical work through complex computer simulations. He is also engaged in science communication, delivering lectures on topics such as “Vatican Astronomy†and the “Compatibility between Science and Religion.â€

Fr. Tom Curran, SJ, founder of the (JPEN), recently shared about the transformative power of education for incarcerated men and women — and their teachers — on in Syracuse, New York.

“They come to confession feeling as if they are terrible, but … they are displaying the fact that they want to be good. The fact that somebody shows up to confession is a lived act that they desire holiness,†said Fr. Gilger.

“What sinfulness is in the Catholic Church’s theological understanding is the intentional, willful distancing of oneself from God,” Fr. Gilger said. “The point of confessing your sins, of attending to sins, is only to allow the God who wants to be with us to rush back into the emptiness that those sins have created.â€

Jesuit Honored by Fordham University

Fordham University honored Fr. Daniel Gatti, SJ (’65, ’66 MS), with the Nicholas O’Neill Memorial Award in recognition of his dedicated service to the university on January 21, 2026, during its 2026 Long Island Presidential Reception. Fr. Gatti served as an alumni chaplain at Fordham.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ Attend Installation, Ordination Masses

Alec Hufford, SJ, who is serving at St. Ignatius School in the Bronx, New York, attended the February 6 installation Mass for Archbishop Ronald Hicks at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. At a reception following the Mass, Hufford thanked Archbishop Hicks for speaking in Spanish because it means so much to the students and families that he serves in the South Bronx.

Final Vows

Fr. Randall Gibbens, SJ, professed final vows on January 30, 2026, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Houston. Fr. Gibbens serves as president of Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory of Houston. Father General Arturo Sosa, SJ, received his vows during his recent visitation to the USA Central and Southern Province.

During his visitation, Father General Sosa also received Fr. Penn Dawson SJ’s final vows on February 2, 2026, in the Holy Name Chapel at Jesuit High School in New Orleans. Fr. Dawson is assistant professor of law and campus minister at Loyola University New Orleans.
